Andrade (19-6 MMA, 3-1 UFC) made the lengthy trip from Brazil for the welterweight bout, which took part Saturday at Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.
Following his victory, he told MMAjunkie he was thrilled to fight in a country that reminded him of Brazil, but without the corruption that is currently tearing the country apart.
“It’s a shame, you know,” Andrade said. “We have such a wonderful country. It’s rich in so many things. But we’ve got those people running the country who make a living robbing us.”
Andrade and Walsh engaged in wild striking exchanges early in the first two rounds, but it was his ground game that was the deciding factor when the fight settled into its natural rhythm.
That successful jiu-jitsu based approach led to Andrade taking the fight by scores of 29-28, 29-28 and 29-28.
“I came here to fight MMA, so I’m ready to do everything,” Andrade said. “I’m ready to fight stand-up, on the ground and Walsh was a very tough opponent. So, when I had the opportunity to take him down I wasn’t able to do what I was ready to do. End of the day, it came out my way and I’ll be ready to fight again soon.
“He has a powerful punch. When he got me, I lost my balance. I took some punches. He’s a tough guy, but I was able to turn it around and use my jiu-jitsu and get the fight back.”
