Setting up no gi chokes is an invaluable skill that every serious grappler needs in their submission arsenal.
These chokes are powerful tools whether gi or no gi, sport, mma, self defense, etc.
Dr Kickass, Mike Piekarski, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Former MMA Fighter, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt. (Follow him on instagram.) shared some important information about which chokes are the most powerful:
“In grappling martial arts the use of a chokehold has been shown as an effective method for disabling an opponent. Chokeholds are vascular restraints that function by compressing the carotid arteries and jugular veins to induce unconsciousness. Which chokes is “most effective”? How long does it take to “put someone to sleep?”
Stellpflug performed a study examining the speed of loss of consciousness with sportive chokes on unresisting participants. In the study 11 different types of sportive chokes were used:
•Rear Naked Choke
•North South Choke
•Arm in Guillotine
•Von Flue Choke
Gi-specific were not used in this study.
1-The average time for loss of consciousness was 9.0 seconds
2- No significant difference in LOC (loss of consciousness between different choke types.
3- No difference between “neck-only” chokes and “neck and arm” chokes.
