Developing a Gameplan !!!

THE Real Key To Success!!

Some People say that the best Gameplan is too actually have NO Gameplan. Do YOU agree??? Here is What we have to say and Explain about it.

Sometimes one sentence from your coach can change everything about your style of Jiu-Jitsu. One of the defining aspects of my game was its randomness.  I equated my Jiu-Jitsu game to Jazz: I just made it up as I went along.

It made more sense to me to adapt to each situation as it develops and do whatever made the most sense at the time than to have a game plan with specific moves planned.  But when I described my sense of the game to my coach Michael Proctor, he said it wasn’t correct; I should have a specific Gameplan.

If my coach tells me that everything I’m doing is wrong, then it’s wrong and I’ll change it.  But it’s hard to go about developing a whole new system for your game after a year and a half of doing it a certain way.  It’s been a problem that has been on my mind for quite some time, and is the current hurdle in my way on my Jiu-Jitsu path.

While I was pondering this problem I became aware of a blog called Mapping my Journey where it’s writer Matt publishes his Mind Maps.  These Mind Maps are flowcharts of BJJ techniques, perfect for developing a game plan and using as a reference.  They are color coordinated and really give you a sense of the flow of Jiu-Jitsu and the options you have from various positions.

As soon as I saw his Mind Maps, I light went off in my head.  I knew this was the tool I needed to develop my Gameplan, as my coach instructed me.  I contacted Matt about writing a blog about how to create a Mind Map, so I could begin to develop my own game plan.  He told me he plans to, once he figures out exactly how to go about writing it, but he directed me to a video by BJJ black belt Jason Scully as a great reference to start.

This is an awesome resource and it gives you all of the information and tools needed to develop your own game plan and have a written copy of it to reference.  Jason says in the video that it is a requirement in his school for blue belts and above to all have a Gameplan, and to drill it and work it constantly.

This video and the accompanying worksheet are the final pieces to the puzzle that I’ve been struggling with for so long.  I can’t wait to sit down and fill out the sheet and start developing my new game!  BJJ, and life in general, is one continuous endeavor of self-improvement, and this new system will no doubt be another step forward for me in that endless endeavor.  Check it out and start developing your own Gameplan !
