That’s it Grappling People, the annual Ontario Open is finally here! After a long year of waiting, this May 12th (Gi day) and May 13th (No-Gi day) is going to be awesome.

It is going to be an event full of very exciting fights and the divisions are just STACKED. You can see the registrations coming in daily and we are really proud to say, that for the first time,  it is hitting the full capacity of competitors.  After years of working hard and developing such a great event, the Ontario Open is finally reaching maturity in its name, quality of competition and organization. It Started with 600 competitors for both Gi and No-Gi, and today, it has reached the nearly full potential of 1400 competitors. this is HUGE for a”local” event. People from all over are coming to compete and test their skills. Americans come to fight Canadians on the mat and test the difference in experience and rolling.

The Ontario Open also focuses on the kids. They make sure that our “little” ones and the juniors are not forgotten and still get to compete at the same top level of competition as grown-ups. The divisions for the kids are equally packed with skilled fighters, boys and girls. They will be fighting early in the AM so that they can enjoy the rest of the competition to relax, or the parents can take the rest of the day off and relax.

You may ask yourself what is so different with this tournament? why has it become so big? why should i go to compete there???

Well, let’s answer all of those questions very easily. First off, the place it’s run at is a very nice and spacious facility, Seneca College, very clean, and bright. The way they set it up with the mats (10) looks awesome. It is very “user” friendly, and the organizers thought of everything as a competitor, and as spectators to maximize efficiency and move around. Event staff will take you to where you need to go fight on deck, make sure no mistakes are being made, more like an “In and Out” format so that divisions run fast and smooth. Competitors don’t have to wait too long between matches for their next fight. They have a person operating the Mic, so that all the names are called to make sure you hear if you are missing or not on deck, and shout-outs to sponsors, winners and all medalists on the podium.

The reason why it has become so big is because the Organizer and Creator, Prof. Gringo, has made sure that throughout the years his event gets bigger and bigger by offering us, the fighters, a big event.  By this, it means that he has been working hard on promoting, marketing, getting the right sponsors to help the growth, as well as offering packages and giveaways. Over time, this translates to attracting more serious athletes. Fighters of all types come to try the competition out.

The Professional competitor now registers at the Ontario Open to compete because the brand name of the competition now speaks for itself. People see it as an important event to fight in. This has been the main goal of the Ontario Open, and it’s now been accomplished. It is always a work in progress, it will never cease to get better and bigger.

When you compete at the Ontario Open, You are sure to fight against top athletes and competitors of many different gyms, not just the local academies. So if you are a fighter that works extra hard and long hours at your academy you will NOT be disappointed as you will get to fight hard for the podium. The medals look awesome. We’ll also add, that the team with the most points receives these nice trophies!

The categories are:
– GI (adult, master and junior): 1st, 2nd and 3rd
– No-GI (adult, master and junior): 1st, 2nd and 3rd
– KIDS GI: 1st, 2nd and 3rd
– KIDS No-GI: 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

You will experience a different feel of grappling and  Jiu Jitsu. If you don’t get the chance to travel for competition this is the best possible event to fight at and have the feel of being at a competition away from home while still being at home. This is why we believe that the Ontario Open is at the top of its class as a major Ontario and Canadian BJJ and Grappling Championship. Reffing is also top class. Following the IBJJF rules, the rules are followed to a “T” and the referees are specifically trained to follow the IBJJF rules and to ensure competitors feel scoring is accurate and fair. Head Referee, Andre Terencio, oversees all of the Ontario Open refs.
