This Saturday, the pinnacle of professional jiu jitsu competition returns with another stacked card, as Metamoris 4 takes place in Los Angeles, CA. All matches shall be 20 minutes, following submission only rules, with a total of six matches taking place. The event will stream live on metamoris.com at 8pm EST. To prepare you for Metamoris, we’ve got a quick rundown of each match below. Enjoy!
This match is a very interesting move by the promotion. Thus far, the match up has been kept under wraps, but rumours have surfaced that Kenny Florian could be involved. Could Florian face off against his partner from the Metamoris commentary booth, Jeff Glover? Maybe Florian isn’t involved at all. The match could involve any number of top grapplers, and so we will all have to patiently wait until the match occurs to find out who the two competitors are!
Of all the matches Metamoris has put together to date, this one has the potential to be the most unpredictable, exciting one. Both competitors are excellent no gi fighters and are as diverse, innovative, and quick thinking as they come. One thing is for sure, these two will go after each other until the final bell.
Keenan Cornelius vs Vinny Magalhaes
‘The Redux,’ as it’s being referred to, is a match that was scheduled to happen at Metamoris 3. Unfortunately, Vinny was pulled from the match on the night of the event due to a very bad staph infection. The fans will get to see these two finally square off in a match of creative tacticians. Expect to Keenan to pull guard and work his de la riva game in combination with leg lock attempts, kimura traps and a variety of back takes, while Vinny will try to enforce his will with strong pressure and aggression, combined with a variety of attacks; especially targeting Keenan’s legs if he pulls guard.
Saulo Ribeiro vs Rodrigo ‘Comprido’ Medeiros
This is the only match currently scheduled to be contested in the gi. The match up between the two legends will be very interesting as the multiple time World Champions have promised to put their “old school” jiu jitsu on display. Saulo is a handful for anyone, but Comprido is very unique because of his extremely efficient style of attacking, defending and conserving energy. 20 minutes can be a long time for these veterans, especially if Saulo decides to push the pace early. Spectators are in for a real treat when Saulo and Comprido slap hands and go to war.
Dean ‘The Boogeyman’ Lister vs Josh Barnett
Dean Lister has not been submitted for well over a decade. The veteran is referred to as ‘the Boogeyman’ for a reason. Lister has pulled off countless leg lock submissions and is considered to be practically unsubmittable. Looking to test this theory in what Metamoris is pegging as their ‘Heavyweight Title match,’ is MMA and grappling veteran Josh Barnett. A very unique and talented individual, the self proclaimed ‘Warmaster,’ is an unconventional but incredibly effective grappler. With a style that combines jiu jitsu and catch wrestling with a variety of attacks and transitions he has learnt and developed over years of training and travelling the globe, this match can be a very technical affair while also providing some exciting scrambles and improvisation. Don’t blink when Lister and Barnett finally throw down!
Andre Galvao vs Chael Sonnen
The main event is the true dark horse match of the event. After some hiccups, including a major ordeal with the Nevada State Athletic Commission who did their best to prevent Sonnen from competing after his recent drug testing issues in Nevada, the match is confirmed to still be taking place. Galvao, a multiple time World Champion, will look to try and silence the self proclaimed ‘new face of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.’ Sonnen is a very accomplished wrestler, but has openly pointed out that jiu jitsu is the one art that can defeat a good wrestler. Sonnen, no slouch when it comes to using intangibles to alter the course of a fight, will look to use his physicality, gritty wrestling, and agression to get to a dominant position and hopefully catch a submission. He is excellent from the top position, but his bottom game is in serious question. Galvao on the other hand, is giving up some size, but can make up for much of what he lacks in size with his excellent technique and top notch transitions. The reigning ADCC super fight champion has an incredibly diverse array of attacks on top and from his back, and most likely will keep Sonnen on his toes, defending for the duration of the match. The one excellent thing about this match is that it generates more attention for jiu jitsu, creates some attention for Metamoris among MMA fans, and also will pit two incredible athletes against each other in what will definitely be an entertaining affair.
