IBJJF Montreal Open 2012 Report

This past weekend was the 2nd annual Montreal Open.  By my counting, It attracted 230 competitors.  This is not that impressive considering the Chicago and New York Opens both close registration early because they hit capacity of 1500.    I’m not sure what it is about this IBJJF tournament compared to the others that makes it have such low attendance. Is it a lack of advertising on the tournaments end?  Is it a scheduling thing with it being on the long weekend?   Is it an economical thing?  There are arguments for all of these reasons but either way. I hope next year gets a better turn out.

The usual divisions were pretty stacked.  Male Blue Light had 20 people, feather had 8, I belive medium had a decent size to.  There was only 3 purple belt girls, and about 10 blue belts.  Which is decent, but I know there are a lot more in the area that could have come out.   Mens Purple was pretty sparse and there was only 5 black belts registered most of which took home a default gold and some even took home 2 golds by default.    It’s a sad thing, to me, when people have to take home default golds.  No one should ever have to make the trip out to a tournament and not get to fight.   This is on the organisers, fellow competitors, and all the people who stayed home!

The tournament itself was run pretty well, as we would expect from the IBJJF.  The reffing was top notch and the staff was generally well trained and did their jobs well.   Some of the ring coordinators seemed to be a little overwhelmed by their tasks, but they all did the job well.  I was impressed with all the staffs ability to communicate well in English and French.  The first match of the day started right on schedule and from what I saw it ran on time for the entire day.  We left just before 4pm so I can’t so for sure whether it ended as scheduled. But I do know it was over well before the 10pm I’ve been stuck at other tournaments for.

There are two things about IBJJF tournaments that drive me crazy.  The lack of a visible timer on the scoreboards, and the lack of a matted warm up area.  In general the IBJJF is the cream of the crop, the top dog, the best of the best when it comes to Jiu Jitsu in North America.  But these two things, for me,  are holding it back.   I could even go without the warm up area.  But the lack of a clock is very frustrating as a fighter.    Having a clock visible on the scoreboard would have saved a lot of confusion and the mistake that happened.   My semi final in the absolute was only 5 minutes!  It seemed short at the time, but I just figured it was nothing.  But after watching the video, it was exactly 5 minutes of match time.  This wouldn’t have happened if the score board had the time on it.  The fighters would have noticed, or the referee.  I don’t blame the table worker,  they were shifting back and forth between white and blue belt matches and It can be a pretty hectic job running the scoreboard, manually timing  and keeping a list of winners from the matches.

The venue for the competition was the good old pierre charbonneau center. This is the same venue as last year, and also the venue of the Abu Dhabi Pro Trials.   It’s a very spectator friendly venue with the sunk in arena.   I think it was maybe a bit too big for the event but I’m not sure what other options are available in Montreal.    The competition floor was laid out fairly well, but I would have moved the podium and t-shirt area to the opposite side, to keep access to the warm up area / corral for the fighters a little more clear.

The competition vibe was pretty good as well. People were fighting hard but not being mean spirited about it.  I saw a lot of great camaraderie amongst the competitors.  That is one of the things I love about Jiu Jitsu.  We try to tear each others arms off or choke each other unconscious, but afterwards we are all friends working together to better ourselves and our art.

And here are a bunch of photo albums of the event:
