(Niagara Falls, ON – May 31 2013) Team Canada won the Battle At The Falls, an international women wrestling dual event featuring Canada, the United States and Ukraine held in Niagara Falls to end the FILA International Wrestling Month.

Ultimately, this event was not about the wrestling, it was about the awareness raised for wrestling in this critical week for the sport and its future, showcasing some of the best in the sport as wrestling is trying to claw its way back to the Olympic Games programming.

Tamara Medwidsky, Executive Director of Wrestling Canada.: “USA Wrestling has been amazing partners in this event. The event was a great opportunity for women wrestling and showcased the new rules that FILA adopted in the recent weeks. Marty Calder and his club have stepped up to the plate, and once again delivered a world-class event.”

“We are so thrilled to have been able to pull off this remarkable event in such a short time period,” said Marty Calder, head coach at the Brock Wrestling Club and organizer for the event. “We are blessed to have a great community, who can roll up their sleeves and get the work done. Without the support from the city of Niagara Falls, the partners that contributed, and all the volunteers who devoted time and energy, we would not have accomplished what we did.”

Canada brought an impressive roster of wrestlers to the event, comprised of all its reigning Canadian Champions, including the reigning World Champion and Pan-American Jessica MacDonald [FILA World Ranking #1] (Windsor, ON/Brock Wrestling Club), two-time World Championships medallist Justine Bouchard [FILA World Ranking #6] (Wetaskiwin, AB/Dinos Wrestling Club) and reigning Pan-American Champions MacDonald, Bouchard and Stacie Anaka (Victoria, BC/Burnaby Mountain Wreslting Club) [FILA World Ranking #10].

“We are all extremely excited and thankful to everyone that worked hard to put this event together! All we can do right now is stay positive and proud of our sport and this event is a great way to promote and bring awareness to how amazing wrestling really is,” said Canadian wrestler Braxton Papadopoulos (Team Impact). “It has been really encouraging watching Canada and so many other countries working so hard and coming together in the hopes of saving Olympic Wrestling!”

The event brought together some of the world’s best wrestlers, including reigning World Champion  Elena Pirozhkova (USA, 63 kg), former World Champion Katerina Burmistrova (Ukraine, 72kg) and Ganna Vasilenko (Ukraine, 63kg), as well reigning European Champion Alina Stadnik-Makinya, (Ukraine, 67kg).

m USA defeated Ukraine 16-13 the opening dual of the evening. In the second dual, Canada faced off against Ukraine and took a decisive 20-11 victory. In the ultimate dual of the night, Canada faced their archrivals and southern neighbours, and took the victory 18-10 to finish at the top of the team standings. Canada scored a total of 38 points, the United States 26 points and Ukraine 24 points.

Prior to the event, Olympians Martine DuGrenier (Montréal, QC) and Tonya Verbeek (Beamsville, ON) hosted a clinic for young wrestlers, well attended by over 100 young future champions from the Greater Toronto Area.

The Battle At The Falls were disputed under the new FILA Wrestling rules, which made for some really exciting and fast-paced wrestling that promises a bright future for the sport.

Among the guest list who attended the event, Canadian legend Richard DesChatelets, American legend Dan Gable, former wrestler and current UFC fighter Sean Pierson, as well as a long-list of others Olympians who represented Canada at the Olympic Games.
